Visiting Hōkūleʻa

This Sunday I went to Keaukaha in Hilo to see the canoe Hōkūleʻa and her sister voyaging canoe Hikianalia before they leave for their around the world voyage. It was an inspiring day, and the stories all told of feeling perhaps not worthy, and needing courage. And adventure. I needed to hear all that.

The ceremonies and gifts were amazing and powerful. A stone from the top of Mauna Kea is going along, and the nose flute song took me places on my own voyage. The chants and dancers were awe inspiring.

We took a short canoe ride out to the voyaging canoes, to get a chance to stand on board and look at both the canoes.

We climbed on board to look at the small space on the Hōkūleʻa where the crew would live and journey and store all their supplies.  The sister canoe, Hikianalia is the high tech one, tied alongside that had the solar panels, computers, medical supplies and other emergency devices.  They will be sending the photos from the Hōkūleʻa to the website and school classes. The Hōkūleʻa will navigate with only ancient navigation ways by the Pō Navigators.

Here we are on board saying Aloha to everyone. That is what this voyage is about, spreading Aloha around the world. I want to help with that cause. Maybe I will get more of a chance to in the future, who knows?
